About the book

Most of us learned two ways to handle anger: swallow it or let it rip. Both come with a bill.

Swallow it, and it comes back weeks later as resentment, usually aimed at the wrong person. Let it rip, and you spend the following days cleaning up. Neither one solves anything, and both teach the same bad lesson: that anger is a flaw, and the goal is to have less of it.

Vajrapani's name means “vajra in hand”, and in Tibetan art he looks nothing like calm: dark blue, ringed by flames, fangs showing, planted in a fighter's stance. Tradition places him beside Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri as one of the three great protectors, standing for compassion, wisdom and power. All that ferocity points inward, at whatever takes your freedom without asking: the fear that shuts you up, the pride that swings first, the laziness that passes for prudence, the confusion that swears nothing can be done.

Vajrapani reads that image as instructions. Feel the anger all the way, then give it a direction. Much of the book deals with boundaries: how to draw one without attacking anyone, how to hold it when it gets tested, how to defend what's true for you and still leave the other person standing.

Anger shows up on almost every page, because it's the raw material most people waste. The real subject is power: how to take it back from fear, aim it well, and keep it going over time without turning into the person you can't stand.

From readers of Vajrapani

I really liked the message behind this book, especially the idea that you can be gentle and still be strong.

I went into Vajrapani expecting something pretty heavy and philosophical, and while there is definitely plenty to contemplate, I found the message surprisingly practical and relatable.

Anger is often treated as an emotion that needs to be controlled or eliminated, but this book approaches it from a different angle.

Frequently asked

So should I express my anger or not?

Neither bottle it up nor dump it on someone. The book treats anger as energy with a message in it. The job is to read where it points and put its strength to work.

I'm terrible at setting boundaries. Will this help?

That is the heart of the book: how to phrase a boundary, say it out loud and hold it without aggression.

How does it connect to Tara?

Closely. Fear freezes and anger pushes, and very often it's one energy moving in two directions, so the two books complement each other. Each one still stands on its own.
