About the book

You can love someone completely and still hold them with an open hand. Most of us were never shown how.

From the inside, attachment rarely looks like attachment. It looks like devotion. It looks like worry, loyalty, the sixth time you check whether the message was read. And it lives far beyond romance: in the plan that had to work, the job title you built yourself around, the life you were sure you'd be living by now. The mind closes its hand around something and calls the cramp love.

The standard advice is two words long: let go. It sounds wise and helps nobody, because nobody teaches you how to release something the mind has filed as part of itself. So people try, fail, and add a fresh layer of guilt to the pile.

Avalokiteshvara asks a more useful question: what is your caring actually doing? Care holds. Attachment squeezes. From the outside they look the same. From the inside they run in opposite directions. The book trains you to feel that difference while it is happening: halfway through an argument, while you wait for a reply that doesn't come, the moment your peace starts depending on somebody else's next move.

The figure comes with a Tibetan story worth knowing. Avalokiteshvara vowed to free every being from suffering, looked out at a world that kept producing more of it, and broke apart, his body shattering into a thousand pieces. He was put back together with a thousand arms. Read as method, the story is a warning and a blueprint. Love with no structure breaks the one who loves. Love with arms gets something done.

It is written for people who love a lot and pay dearly for it. Compassion comes back to them as a skill: something you can train, direct, and also point at yourself.

From readers of Avalokiteshvara

I especially liked how it approaches difficult feelings such as jealousy, fear of abandonment, and dependence through compassion rather than judgment.

What stood out most to me was the idea that compassion doesn’t require you to cling to someone or make them responsible for filling an emptiness inside you.

It gave me several things to think about and reminded me that healthy love should leave room for both connection and individuality.

Frequently asked

Is this a book about detachment?

Not in the cold sense. Nobody finishes it loving less. What changes is the grip.

Will it help after a breakup?

That is one of the situations it was written for. A good part of the book deals with the stretch of time when the other person is gone and your mind keeps talking to them anyway.

Do I have to start with Tara?

No. The volumes can be read in any order. If what hurts right now is a relationship, a loss or a bond you can't loosen, start here.

Do I need any background in Buddhist philosophy?

None. Every traditional element is explained when it appears, and only as far as the method needs it.

Is there a Portuguese edition?

Yes: Avalokiteshvara, on Amazon Brazil.
