About the book

Overthinking keeps a schedule. It loves 2 a.m., long drives and the shower. This book was written for those appointments.

You know the routine. The conversation from three years ago gets another replay, now with better comebacks. The message you'll never send reaches its fortieth draft. The decision you've been researching for a month gets murkier every time you research it. And someone who loves you says “just let it go”, as though that option had never crossed your mind.

What almost nobody mentions is that the Buddha dealt with this directly. In the Vitakkasanthana Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 20) he lays out five steps, in order, for a thought that refuses to leave. It reads like a troubleshooting guide, which is exactly what you need at 2 a.m. The book starts there and adds twenty more practices for the other shapes the loop takes: the worry, the grudge, the guilt, the decision that keeps not getting made.

Each of the 21 practices names its source, a particular sutta or classical manual you can look up tonight for free, and the book tells you where to find it. Each one also comes with plain instructions: what to do, for how long, and how it feels once it starts working. You won't find “sit with it” followed by good luck.

The goal is modest and useful: notice the loop, break it, and get back to your life. Several practices work standing in line, stuck in traffic or halfway through a meeting. Nobody is asking you to empty your mind or become serene forever.

Frequently asked

Do I have to meditate?

No. A lot of them work on your feet, in the car or halfway through a meeting. Sitting meditation is an option, never a requirement.

Is it part of The Technologies of the Awakened Mind?

No, it's a standalone book. Faster and funnier than the series, with the same approach: method first, doctrine only when it helps.

Do I have to read it in order?

No, and it was written so you wouldn't need to. Every practice stands on its own, with its source and its steps. Jump to the one that fits your loop.

Can it replace therapy?

No. They are contemplative tools for ordinary days, and they don't take the place of mental health treatment.
